Australia Needs to Pay Me But I Doubt They Will

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

A large set of new laws governing content in Australia have been passed and go into affect on 20 Jan 2008. Here’s the skinny on what their government will do:

  • “Content service providers” are required to check the consumers age and apply restrictions according to an examination done by the Australian Office of Film and Literature (OFLC)
  • The examination sets a rating of the content based on their own rating system
  • They can enforce it by banning content or sites, sent take down notices to hosts, or even blacklist whole sites or companies with themandatory Australian Internet sensor.

Australian government, I’m happy to consider complying with your new Australian laws even though I live and am hosted in the U.S.A. I will need the following from you:

  1. An overview or summary of these new laws.
  2. Clear detailed documentation, in electronic form, on the laws, rating process, ratings, and any other related items needed to comply with these new laws.
  3. A government accepted method to check the age of Australian consumers. All electronics or servers involved will need clear documentation along with a one year proven track record of 99.999% uptime before integrating it with my systems.
  4. An Australian government liaison to work with my project manager and my accountant.

After this information is provided, I’m happy to consider it with the intention of finding an acceptable solution between us both. At this point, any delays, blacklisting, censorship, or take-down will be due to your own delays or neglect. I am ready and waiting to jump into action.

All expenses will be summarily tracked by my accountant and invoiced to you; each due within 30 days. Please have your liaison provide a clear method for reimbursement back to us. Starting in 2008, these are the hourly rates (outside of hard expenses) for taking on this project:

  • Project manager, $175/hr
  • Accountant, $250/hr
  • Owner supervision, $275/hr
  • Web developer, $75/hr
  • SQL developer, $125/hr
  • C++ developer, $125/hr

Thank you, and I look forward to this new cross-Pacific partnership. You may contact me using the information listed in the WHOIS database for this domain.

DJ Trinitron Set This Thurs; The Glitch Mob Grows

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

DJ Triniton has her set this Thurs 6 Dec 07 from 9:30-11:30pm at Chapel Bar. She’s been my long-time friend and I’ve watched her growth (and helped a little) as a DJ. She spins dirty-dirty-dwerty house w/ a little old school hip-hop, electro, and breaks thrown in. Its, literally, a school night for her so she’s got the earlier slot. You can still get home and get enough sleep to make it to work, or school, on Friday! So go to Chapel tomorrow. GO! Get a seasonal drink by the good-looking bartenders, and groove it out…drink it out.

Also, The Glitch Mob continues to slay it as they produce music, grow, and demonstrate they’ve got their shit together. They’ve got talent, some good management in the crew, and have a can-do collaborative attitude to match. I support them in every way I can. Yes, they performed at one of my shows in Seattle.

Delicious Breakfast, Future Housing, Retirement Planning

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I’m completely hooked. The best pancakes on the planet are made by B&H Dairy. I get either banana or strawberry. I think the two behind the counter have a running bet between each other to guess my flava’ of the day. I also get a side of two scrambled eggs. That and my daily NY Post makes for a wonderful way to start my day.

I really do like the tree lined streets between avenues here in the city. Walking around, I saw a dog without his master. Sad. You could see he was anxious.

After breakfast, I camped out at Whole Foods. They have a good internet connection unlike the Time Warner Cable crap I have in my sublet. Cable internet is horrible in dense urban areas. Why? Because they oversell their capacity and each person ends up with very little bandwidth. Its exactly like airlines overselling flights. They make more money but don’t get passengers to places on time and anger them. Just like Time Warner Cable doesn’t download my data on time and angers me.

Back to Whole Foods…and IRAs. After I sold my primary house in Seattle, I took the proceeds are have invested them in some aggressive mutual funds. All funds outside the US because growth and strong currency outside the US is the way to go for the short term. I’m also researching moving my old Microsoft 401(k) into an IRA that has more investment options and that I can manage myself. Now being a self-employed guy, I want to get my hands into those funds and move them into more interesting investments. What I have them in now is good…but I want better.

I’m also moving into action on my housing plan for 2008 and beyond. I’m seeking to start a group of people, two to six, to join in to rent, lease, or buy a live/work space in the Lower East Side, East Village, or maybe Chinatown in 2008. It could be separate bedrooms, shared, build-out, loft-like…I’m open to lots of creative ideas. I think a live/work space would allow the most flexibility for everyone in the group; again I’m open to alternatives. All interest and leads are appreciated and welcome.

I’m very interested to also cultivate a group of people to join as a partnership, LLC, co-op, etc. to buy a space or a small building. I have experience in purchasing buildings in Washington and am happy to be the lead for a purchase here. The laws and customs are different in NYC but based on my knowledge and advice I’ve received, I only need to have good partners, a good real estate agent, attorney, and banker to make this dream happen. I’m exploring the co-housing and intentional community organizations to learn of best practices, build allies, and make friends. This Wednesday, I will be at the Brooklyn Co-housing meeting.

First Snow While I’m Living in New York City

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Last night, it snowed. Not tons but enough to cover the city with white wonder. I made some espresso to wake up. Made a snowman. Ate breakfast. Decided to watch a movie.

I headed up to Lincoln Center to see Michael Clayton, the George Clooney vehicle. I’m quite happy to watch George Clooney for two hours; handsome man. There was a lot of subway repairs going. The B wasn’t running north past West 4th, but the D was running on the local track. So I hopped it and expected it to hit all the local stops as if it was the B. And it did until 59th St and then decided to skip everything until 125th. In Harlem. I wanted 72nd, I got 125th. So, there was no way for someone on the B or D line to get off between 59th and 125th. Everyone was out of luck. Maybe the C did but I wasn’t on that train. How…can…you…know…this? I read the signs. Didn’t say that the magic “local” stopped at 59th street. Sheesh!

In Harlem, I walked across the platform and hopped a train going downtown. I had a NY Post with me so found another showing of the movie later. Found it and got to this new theater in time. Popcorn…water. Ready to go.

The movie was entertaining but not excellent. His tag line “Do I look like I’m negotiating!” came at an odd time in the movie. It was so much like Nicholsons’, “You can’t handle the truth!” that I wanted to see how it was in context…and it fell kinda flat.

Afterwards, hopped back home to make and play some music. When I checked on him, I found that my snowman must have had too much to drink. He had fallen down! The lout.
