Mr. Black and Tubway Launch New Party

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

My friends at Mr. Black and Tubway launch a new saturday night party “The Church Sessions” starting this Saturday 15 March 2008.

Expect the spirit and energy of Mr. Black combined with the serious house, soulful, sexy, banging beats (on up to four turntables at once) of the Tubway family. As Edina from Ab Fab said, “Names…names…names!” Many kick-ass people are involved in this to make it a party…to make it a new statement on the New York City nightlife scene.

Go go go! I’ll also be there with bells on. This Saturday night, 150 Varick @ Vandam in New York City. $10 before 2am, $15 after.

DJ Trinitron Set This Thurs; The Glitch Mob Grows

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

DJ Triniton has her set this Thurs 6 Dec 07 from 9:30-11:30pm at Chapel Bar. She’s been my long-time friend and I’ve watched her growth (and helped a little) as a DJ. She spins dirty-dirty-dwerty house w/ a little old school hip-hop, electro, and breaks thrown in. Its, literally, a school night for her so she’s got the earlier slot. You can still get home and get enough sleep to make it to work, or school, on Friday! So go to Chapel tomorrow. GO! Get a seasonal drink by the good-looking bartenders, and groove it out…drink it out.

Also, The Glitch Mob continues to slay it as they produce music, grow, and demonstrate they’ve got their shit together. They’ve got talent, some good management in the crew, and have a can-do collaborative attitude to match. I support them in every way I can. Yes, they performed at one of my shows in Seattle.

Sideshow with Rainblo in NYC; Meeting Paul Alexander

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Tonight, my friend Rainblo invited me to his new event, Sideshow. Sideshow is each Sunday night currently based in Tillman’s located at 165 W 26th St, New York. Open bar from 10-11pm w/ performances throughout the night. This opening night, the performances included sexy women dance group, erotic ballet, and juggling. Rainblo owned the room MCing the performers, spurring the crowd on to debauchery, and keeping the spirit fun, sexy and full of life. The venue has a great vibe and is perfect for this show. I’m going back for more Sideshow!

Ran into Josh, Amy from Atlanta, Murray, Rich Rent, Paul Alexander, and more. Paul Alexander is an icon of mine; being part of the Jackie 60 crew and The Ones. Paul and I talked for a while on his current band as well as his history with Jackie. I made a trip to New York City in October 1996 with a major reason being a part of a Jackie 60 party. I did and that experience is one of the significant inspiration moments in my past leading me to what I do today. I have a fantastic story about calling the Jackie 60 phone number that Tuesday morning to hear the theme and crawling the city to put together my outfit. It includes a rubber miniskirt, the Path train, and approval from Kitty Boots on my outfit you see me wearing in this picture. Ask me sometime and I’m happy to tell you this story.

Electro-House DJ set

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

My good friend, Maryam, in Seattle will be happy to hear that I recorded a house set yesterday. Electro house this time. I’ve been out of the house music scene for a while. Here in New York, I’m getting more exposed to it so its showing up in the tracks I buy. Here’s a set which is almost all electro house. As always, I am available for booking by contacting me at http://www.socialliving.com.

Widescreen, Workout, and Cocktails

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Starting today, I’m going to start taking my pictures in 16:9 widescreen format. I like the way it guides me to frame the shot and also provides more context of the surroundings. These I took on my way to the gym.

Later that night, I met my friend Peter for a cocktail party at his home. I was happy to also see Todd who flew in from Los Angeles. I know them both and they have become a long-distance couple with plans for Todd to move to New York City. I also met a few new friends at the party before we went out to Cielo.

Now, I knew ahead of time that Junior Vasquez was performing. I know his music style. And I know that I don’t like it. Vocal house w/ screeching divas, gay anthems, and the trancey-house sound that makes the gays go bump-bump in the night. But I wasn’t there for the music, instead for the friends and scene. For the scene, it was a good party and we all were having fun. I met The Legendary Father Chris, a longtime club denizen of New York since the 80s. He got me laughing more than once. Met a nice guy and woman out on the patio and spent some time lounging with them.

I went home probably 3am. I started out going the right direction, but found myself wandering in the West Village because of the architecture there and the look of the streets. So I became lost, but I didn’t care. Just kept wandering. Eventually, I hailed a cab and headed home.

Nothing is Private in New York City

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Yesterday afternoon, I stopped to get a chicken kebab, hummus, and the works. Then over the radio comes a memory, a song from my past. “Give Me Tonight” by Shannon. This and her more well known “Let the Music Play” were two early dance songs that I loved. I can remember driving down the road in my used white Ford Fairmont, with bench seats and a/c which you need in Alabama, listening to Shannon on a cassette tape. I loved “Let the Music Play” but when I heard the whole album, I discovered “Give Me Tonight” which became my favorite of hers. Several remixes of both songs came out around 2000 by Junior Vasquez and Hex Hector and are available online.

Last night, I was having a beer with a new friend. He’s lived in the city for a while and had me in stitches laughing. Then while telling a funny story, he said something amazing. “Nothing is private in New York City.” I think he could be right.

NYC is huge and has millions of people living in small spaces one on top of the other. People leave their tiny homes and go outside. While outside, with millions of people, you can easily overhear conversations in a cafe, on the subway…everywhere. You can easily watch people across the street in their home from your window. Not that I’ve done that. Ah-hem. Finally, people here in the city are brazen and forward. They speak their minds; I love that.

As an example, later in the night, I was having a trivia and dare competition with someone else. It was my turn for a question and the dare was taking my shirt off. Shannon popped in my head and I asked him, “Who sang the song ‘Give Me Tonight’?” Without hesitation he said, “Shannon.” Damn it. So I went double or nothing which meant that I would have to take my shirt and pants off. I thought a little more, still on the 80s kick, and asked who sang the song, “Cum On Feel The Noize”. In my head, the music style for Cum On and Twisted Sister’s “We’re not gonna take it” are very close. Both their videos (Cum On, We’re Not) also destroy houses. Again, not hesitating he said Quiet Riot. And like the trooper I am having no problems with nudity, I took of my shirt and dropped my pants for all to see.

Nothing is private in New York City.

Seattle Decibel Music Festival Advice

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

The Decibel guys back in Seattle have been hyping their lineup for months now. Here’s my advice. Sean Horton and Jerry Abstract are two of the key guys; friends for a long time. I think both from near Detroit. They love techno and if from Detroit that makes sense. The technology for laptop music became affordable several years back and they leaped into it. So they are both laptop laptop techno oriented.

The first few years of the Decibel Festival were influenced by this. Nothing wrong with that, it was natural for them. But something that an attendee should keep in mind. They are not neutral curators, instead biased performers with a good knowledge base about electronic music. You will continue to see a strong influence of that music style as well as performances by them or their close friends in the festival even this year.

I do praise for pulling the festival together. No one else was going to do it as the public Seattle electronic scene has been sputtering near death since 2001. Once the stock market bubble crashed and people didn’t have extra money anymore, the audience didn’t go out as much. Artists didn’t have as much money to buy equipment. Bars didn’t experiment or pay performers. And unfortunately, that event six years ago has still seriously dampened the scene in Seattle.

However, Seattle loves festivals. It makes people think they are getting a good “bang for their buck”. They’ll take off their Teva sandals, dust off their tennis shoes, and go to a bar to hear a fest-i-val! Weeee. Sometimes, festivals like Decibel pay off; sometimes not. In this case, they bring in artists rarely seen in the town of Seattle. They bring the couch potatoes out to listen to music that is not played on MTV, VH1, or commercial radio. They bring a glimmer of light.

The Decibel Festival lineup is available. Look it over. After hearing about their lineup announcements for months, here are my picks and cautions.

  • Henry DB Art Gallery opening. Its electronic music in a modern art gallery. What’s not to love for $10. Lusine is performing and you can see “COLORFIELD VARIATIONS”.
  • DB opening part/death of party w/ Diplo, Switch, and Simian Mobile Disco. $17 is pushing it.
  • Beyond bookings/ NYC showcase. I’ve heard Wolf + Lamb in New York. Mostly minimal laptop tech, but its ok. Not worth the $20 though.
  • Future Funk Showcase. Its got another live set by Jacob London. I love these guys and deserve support. Its worth the $12. DJ Heather is also performing but she’s not my fav anymore.
  • Sunday headfuk showcase/db finale has Chris De Luca of Funkstörung and Shitkatatpult’s Phon.o. I like both Funkstorung and Phon.o and recommend checking out their collaboration/batter here. The PR says, “…with a spirited live set of glitched out accapellas, booty bass and the filthiest break beats you’re likely to ever hear.” I’d pay the $20 just to hear what mayhem they might create
  • Claude VonStroke is performing at the Mothership Label Showcase for $20. I think too much money but if you like his sound, check it out.

Last Rebar For Me In Seattle

Monday, May 28th, 2007

We decided to go to Re-Bar tonight. I have such good memories of Re-Bar over the years. Sunday night being a great way to end the weekend. West coast house music rules here. Brian Lyons is the main DJ and he was up for a visit from LA where he lives now. Wesley Holmes was also performing. I grabbed a few pics of Susan-Char, Trinity, Meredith, and Kelly.

Puyan Debut at Trinity Nightclub

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Last night, I went to hear Puyan spin his first time at Trinity nightclub. He’s committed. Haha. Maryam, Nima, and sew more people were also there. Puyan kicked ass with a house set.

Red Pony — Live!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Last night I went to hear Rebecca West aka Red Pony aka Miss Kick perform her first public live electronic set at Oscillate. She’s an absolute master at vinyl; playing in the chunky tech-house realm. Recently, though, she’s been producing her own music. It was great to talk with her and her paramour Brett Johnson. Then to hear her new music live and composed uniquely for the night using Ableton Live and keyboard.
