Adios Mini

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Well…this morning, I sold my Mini. It was kinda sad to see it go, but I just won’t need a car over the summer in NYC. A nice woman from across the water purchased it and was “all smiles” when she saw it and later drove away in her new Mini.

Its the shedding of many large material items. The car was the first one. There could be more to come. Its a big change for me but I think a good one. Complacent. Comfortable. Reasonable. Those are all words that I don’t want to have around me right now in my life. I’ve lived an exceedingly comfortable life here in Seattle for a decade. Enough of that.

Touring My Properties, Visiting a Friend, and Geek Out

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Today, I met my friend Boris. Boris is a really creative guy that holds the punk ethos high, spins 90s house music, and rides a Ducati. Amazing. I had some of his vinyl for several months and it was good to catch up with him. We met at Vivaci, the best coffeehouse in North America, and it reminded me again that I won’t have Boris nor fantastic coffee like this as easy to get much longer.

Then I met Matt who will be managing my rental properties over the summer. We toured both of them and began exchanging knowledge about each. I also got to go on board his boat that is docked on Lake Washington. Its nice. Then I had yet another moment. It was raining and we could see the gray look it gave everything as I looked over Lake Washington towards Bellevue, the forests, and mountains. Not going to see anything like that in NY. Maybe Maine?

At night, I did blah stuff like filing receipts, balancing books, and upgrading Wordpress on this server.

I Have a Home in NYC

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I heard tonight that I have a home in Williamsburg for next month when I move to NYC. Wahoo! I have the sublet from mid-June until mid-July. A month. That gives me a great launching pad to find another sublet in Manhattan. The location seems great and the roommates too. Now…I have a date to be in the city and everything else will march to that.

Starting to Learn What I Don’t Know About New York City

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Yesterday, I had a good talk with Rod. Rod is a friend that now lived in NYC. He gave me all kinds of tips. To help me, he described it as three spokes:

  1. Housing He recommends that I sublet for 3 months a furnished place located in Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, Tribeca, East/West Village. Pack a suitcase and bring very little because it is temporary. Then from this home base, I can get my bearings in Manhattan and learn it and the boroughs. This is the same advice that Kelly gave me last week. I’m seeing some wisdom here. He said once I’m there that I won’t have a problem finding a living situation that I want. There is such variety in the city in people, places, and opportunities.
  2. Job He said it is no worry for me not to have a job. Since its a 24×7 city, people are always somewhere doing something. So I won’t lack for people or interaction if I don’t take a job in those three months.
  3. Dating He said the variety of people is stellar. Every look, age, race, color, interest. Friends, sex-only buddies, boyfriends, partners, and other types that I don’t even know about. Wow, this sounds great.

I also chatted with another friend, Matt, that lives here in Seattle. I’m exploring ways to keep my rental properties here while learning more about NYC and if I want to purchase something there. So we spoke about he being the property manager for me here. He was very interested and I was also. Now I need to do some more financial work including tax planning. Fun. Weeee.

Dinner at Kingfish

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Tonight I had dinner with my ex from 2000 Kelly, his sister Joy, and her friend Glenn. The latter two were visiting from Philly. It was great catching up with Joy, she’s a good soul. As such, she welcomed me to visit her whenever I want when I get to New York city.

All three of them had tons of questions, comments, discussion, and ideas on my move and the city itself. All of them have lived there before. Later in the evening, we got on a discussion about reality TV, Borat, and gay culture. A really lively fun night and delicious food at Kingfish.

I’ve continued to tell people about my move. Everyone is really supportive and also sad. I’ll miss being close to many of my friends.

Dinner with David. Its NYC.

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Tonight, I had dinner with my good friend David and his partner Jeromy. I’ve known him for about 11 years. We met shortly after I got to Seattle. Moving was heavy on my mind. We also gabbed about movies, the genetic lottery, and migration of people through Europe as it was settled. Oh…and the National Geographic DNA ancestor map migration thing.

During the night, I paused. And said, “Its New York City.” I’ve made my choice.

I’m moving to New York City or San Francisco!

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Well…I’ve decided to move! It’s between NYC and San Fran. And I’ve just about decided on New York City.

What am I getting myself into?

I’m not going for a job. And I don’t think I’ll even look for a job for several months. Maybe some part time whatever just to keep me from going crazy during the day. I’ve gotten into some very creative work here in Seattle with Social Living Productions and I’m kinda knocking on talent and an audience that just doesn’t exist here. But it does in those two cities. I’ve always wanted to live in one of those cities. I don’t want to be 50 years old and think coulda/shoulda. So…time for me to move.

I’m going to blog about my journey and exploration wherever I go. I was a blogger back in the mid 90s. Writing each day about crap and my vacation across the US and Europe. I gave it up after a year or two. I think I still have a backup of it on some CD…somewhere. But this is a new journey so I’ma bloggin’ again.
